Early voting
Counties may set up to 15 days of early voting before Election Day; varies by county.
Absentee / mail-in
Request any time. Ballot must be postmarked by the day before Election Day and received before the canvass (typically within 13 days).
ID requirements
Photo ID with current residential address required (North Dakota DL/ID, tribal ID, or a non-photo long-term care certificate). Address must match poll book or supplemental docs.
Election Day hours
Polls open at least 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM local time (counties may open earlier). If you are in line at 7:00 PM, you can vote.

  • North Dakota is the only state with no voter registration — you just need to bring proper ID.
  • ID must show your current residential street address. A PO Box doesn't count.
  • If your ID doesn't have the right address, bring a current utility bill, bank statement, or rental agreement.
