North Carolina offers 17 days of in-person early voting with same-day registration. Photo ID is required at the polls. Standard registration closes 25 days before Election Day.

Registration deadline
25 days before Election Day (online/mail). Same-day registration available at any early voting site during the 17-day early voting period.
Early voting
17 days of in-person early voting beginning the 3rd Thursday before Election Day through the Saturday before.
Absentee / mail-in
Request must be received by 7 days before Election Day. Ballot must be received by 7:30 PM Election Day.
ID requirements
Photo ID required (North Carolina DL/ID, US passport, military ID, tribal ID, university ID, or free state voter ID).
Election Day hours
Polls open 6:30 AM to 7:30 PM Eastern Time. If you are in line at 7:30 PM, you can vote.

Extra info:

  • Same-day registration is available at any early voting site (not on Election Day).
  • If you don't have an acceptable photo ID, you can get a free voter ID card at your county board of elections.
  • Mail ballots must be RECEIVED by 7:30 PM Election Day — postmark is not enough.
