Iowa requires photo ID at the polls and registration 15 days before Election Day. Same-day registration is available with proof of residence, and early voting runs for 20 days.

Absentee / mail-in
Request by 15 days before Election Day. Ballot must be received by 8:00 PM Election Day.
ID requirements
Photo ID required at the polls (Iowa DL/ID, US passport, military ID, tribal ID, or veteran's ID).
Election Day hours
Polls open 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM Central Time. If you are in line at 8:00 PM, you can vote.

  • Iowa allows Election Day registration with photo ID and proof of residence.
  • Voters without an Iowa DL/ID can request a free voter ID card from their county auditor.
  • Mail ballots must be RECEIVED by 8:00 PM Election Day — postmark is not enough.
